what cam is best ?
i have a 1969 camaro rs convertible, i am putting in a 5.7 ltr from a latemodel truck i have an edelbrock 600cfm carb and i haveto buy the edelbrock manifold to use with the vortech heads, i also have to get an electric fuel pump (due to there is no place for the mechanicle fuelpump on the late of a block) i want a rough idle cam but not too extreme, i want to keep the rest of the engine strock if possible i dont have too much money to put into it. can anybody let me know what duration or lift i should be looking at to get that rough idle, or if you have an exact cam i should buy please let me know thank you...

Crane 2102 will work for you just fine. Use new lifters with it.Jim

You could also check out Comp's XE268H. Comp claims that it's the largest cam to use with stock convertor and/or limited engine mods. Limited engine mods would pertain to aftermarker intake and carb. Some headers wouldn't hurt either. Is that a 96-up vortec headed engine? If so a Professional Products dual plane intake (129.00) would work very well and would make decent performance.RAY

Re: what cam is best ?
You have no idea what you're doing. You seem to want the motor to idle roughly so that you can show off in front of the geeks down at the local drive-in. Well, the geeks are the only ones who will be impressed. The old guys and the savvy young guys will recognize you as a poser.Originally posted by allmine69rs

There's nothing wrong with using a cam which will make the walls shake if you have all the other components in the motor and converter and trans and rear end to make it work correctly, but you're trying to shortcut the process and make it seem like you've got a hot car when you really don't.
You will have little or no vacuum to operate power brakes and other vacuum-operated accessories and the motor won't have enough power to pull the hat off your head down low. The car will be miserable to drive and you'll look stupid.PLANET EARTH, INSANE ASYLUM FOR THE UNIVERSE.

An engine is a system. All the parts need to fit together with a particular performance goal in mind. If the cam doesn't match the heads, the carb, the intake manifold, the displacement, the compression ratio, the rear axle ratio, the ignition curve, performance would go down, not up.
Your post reads like you want a cheap cam with a rough idle. That's not much of a performance goal, and there's not enough info in your question to provide a meaningful answer.
By the way, you can get a rough idle by messing with the fuel mixture. No need for a cam. Besides, you just slammed the guy who is the most able to provide you info.Jack

The method most used by myself and other well informed 15-16 year old hot rod experts was to utilize a blown-out muffler and pull off a plug wire or two. It made my '39 Dodge four-door with a stock flathead six sound like a real bear.

What is this late model truck engine out of? and what year? First of all, I'm pretty sure if that's a Vortec engine you have, it is going to be a hydraulic roller cam stock. That means the engine has to be 1996 or newer. And correct me if I'm wrong but the engine should have around 9:1 compression on the late model vortec engines. GM Performance makes a "HOT" cam specifically for that engine. I would check it out. My friend put a '99 cadillac vortec in his '72 chevelle with a GM Hot cam in it and it sounded pretty good. A little lope, but not too much. But yes, you will eventually need to put a converter in there. Just save your money and do it.
