Help with my small block 400

[65Chevy]

I came acrossed a 1965 Chevy Fleetside Pickup with a small block 400 in it. I'd like to restore this truck and make it into a hot rod.
HELP! I've never restored a truck in my life.
What can I do first to make the engine run at top performance on a low budget?

The most economical thing to do is a proper tune up. If you lack the tools and/or skill, check around for someone trustworthy and have a pro do it. It will run it's best, and most economical. Or he may tell you that there are some problems that need repair/replace. You may learn that it performs as well as you want it to. Then you can move on to other modifications, like wheels/tires, upholstery, whatever.

65 Chevy...Do keep in mind if you decide to install a different transmisson behind your 400SB...They have to have their own flywheel and or torque converter.They are not balanced internally..At least all the ones I have dealt with weren't..
