gears did do some good in round track motors 20 yrs ago. from 4,000 rpm's to 8,000 rpm's every lap is hard on a chain. they broke big time. nothing like drag racing. belts might be the answer now, but they didn,t have them then.
as far as harmonics go i wroked for UPS in the 1970's and they had about 125,000 300 ford 6 cyl's (with gear drives) running up and down the road like crazy and they adv. 115,000 miles, before the motors was replaced, i dont see where the harmonics had anything to do with it.
