    327 build

     



    i have a 67' tahiti jet boat that came with a 327 hypo out of a corvette and has a corvette steering wheel, so i want to keep the boat orginal. the 327 finally wore out and just couldnt pull skiers anymore, so i pulled it and dropped in a 350 for now. im planning on taking a class at my junior college and rebuilding it myself. i would like any suggestions on the build...cam, head work, intake, stroke it? i would like to get as much power out of it as possible using 10-1 compression, i have to run 91 octane gas here in cali. stock it maxed out at 5000 rpm with the jet i have. so i would like the power to max out at 5500-6000 and start around 2500-3000, my cruising speed will be around 3000, never much lower then that since teh engine revs fast with a jet. and how much power could i expect using 10-1 compression? is it worth it to stroke it? i believe the 67 hypo was a small hournal 327, so i dont know how difficult it is to stroke that. any advise, experience or tips with this 327 would be well appreciated.
    ....and in bullhead, where i usually go, they offer 100 octane gas....so maybe i could run 11.5-1? and use some octane supreme 130...only octane booster ive found that works...whenever i go to another lake?
    max hp i want is 450 REAL horsepower, at 500 my boat would hit 80 mph and the hull is extremely unsafe above 70.

    ONE OF THE BIGEST PROBLEMS WITH BOATS IS TRYING TO (DOCK) THE BOAT. IF YOU HAVE MUCH MORE THAN SAY 1,000 R.P.M. IDLE SPEED THIS BECOMES RATHER DIFFICULT.I WOULD NOT MESS AROUND WITH ANY MORE THAN 10 TO 1 COMP. RATIO.I DON'T THINK IT IS WORTH IT.WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DECIDE TO GO A LAKE THAT DOES NOT HAVE THE HIGH OCTANE?IT REALLY LIMITS YOU.

    yeah i agree, just the thought of that much more power made me smile haha but 10-1 is just fine.

    Erik hit the nail on the head. First off, even if you were able to make the hp you want with 327 heads (fat chance), it would take so many rpm's to do it that you'd need a nasty cam and a nasty cam just won't idle down where you need it to in order to dock a boat. Of course you could do it with a blower, but the way I read your post, you want to do it naturally aspirated and stock appearing.

    You're going to need more cubes and better heads to achieve your goal of 450 hp in my opinion. I'd be lookin' for a way to build a torque motor rather than a hp motor to pull a boat. And I wouldn't be startin' with a 327 block and small journal crank, even though Speed-O-Motive does make a small journal stroker kit to make a 383. You'd still need some heads in my opinion.

    Look through this list of 108 Chevy small blocks and see how different combinations worked on the dyno. Look for BIG torque.

    i just want to keep the boat original, if i ever want to really satisfy my need for speed ill save and get a big block jet boat. this was my dad's baby and now its mine so i want to keep it as orginal as possible. i just want to have fun rebuilding the engine myself and really get as much out of it as possible. i just need some advise on cam, head work i can do, intake...single or dual plane. if anyones ever built up a 327 or has any links that would be great too. thanks forall your input
