there are kits made for the swap. I don't know if there is better filtering in spin on's tho, there is better access to the filter element with a canister, and there is more SA of filter element with a canister. The filtering qualities really depend on the quality of the filter, not the type of filter, a good fiber element filter is going to be a lot better than a cheaper paper element filter, no matter if it is canister or spin on.
Any parts supply house should carry a changeover kit, I've used lots of them. Sure takes the mess out of a filter change! The filters aren't as big, granted, but you just change them a little more often.
I'd rather have a canister than a spin on myself, filters right there where you can get to it. I find them less messy myself, becuse there always verticle , and the canister catches the oil, just use a rag taking the filter out and use it to catch the mess, then clean out the canister with the rag, put new filter in and fill 1/2 way full of fresh oil, I did that with my '51 Chevy, and it took about 10 minuites, and never jacked the car up, was tight but I got it. I got the falcon ( spin on ) without jacking too tho, but that was because the filter is right on the side, out in the open, and the drain plug is right in front.Quote:

The spin on kits are dead easy to fit, I had a cannister engine and swapped it over, depends on the brand some you have to remove your bypass valve fitted at the top of your cannister - bolted to the block this was the style that I got and some you re-use your bypass adaptor to attach the new unit. If you get one that doesnt use a bypass filter you have to use spin on filters that come with inbuilt bypass in them
Hope this helps
