to weld or not to weld??

once again I have a problem with my SBC.....recently I could not get the starter to line up and it tore up my flywheel bad. I took it to a shop since I work all of the time....and before they even started they noticed that the piece coming off of the block on the passenger side that the starter bolts to....had a crack in it. In my area there is nobody willing to weld this crack up with the engine in the vehicle and I cannot take it out right now. Is there any other way to fix/ fill this hole so that it can be drilled and re tapped? Any creative, or informative ideas would be appreciated. Thanks again in advance.

i had a small block that had a long bolt in it like a stud you have to drill it out all the threads out and run the bolt thru the top and if it is crack you can not do much but weld and i have fixed them by welding them

i know that this may sound really bad, but would Magnum steel work if the area was clean and paint free. I could drill it out.....fill it tight and the drill it again and tap that hole. I have heard that this stuff will do wonders as long as you let it cure correctly.

boy there is a lot of pull on them 3/8 bolts it needs to be welded

that's kinda' what I was afraid of. Do you happen to know what you need to weld this. One of my buddies is a welder at Warn Cat and said that you basically just use TIG with a stainless rod? (he gave me specifics about the type of rod.....but needless to say that went right over my head!!!) If that is the case I think he is going to do it for me.

If u haave a stick welder go to ssupply house and they will recommend the right rod.

NO the best way to fix this is with 99 nickel rod weld mold 700 rod. not stainless may not be very easy to tap if you have to or brass works good here is a oil rail i fix with this rod

they say you should. but i do not and have fixed a lot of blocks with this rod and i know it works i weld a bit maybe 1/2 inch and peen the hell out of it. this rod 700 mold welding rod i know will work for you. i have put starter ears back on blocks and weld water jacks with it to and drills and taps nice and it will not take a lot of heat to weld with it on the ear of the block there will be not to much pulling like welding something in the milddle of the block were it pull together when it cools down the peening helps this to

This may be way off, but dancuck makes an adapter to use the three bolt 55-57 chevy starter on a newer automatic trans. It goes between the block and the trans. This might eliminate the need for welding al together,and you don't have to pull the motor. Carlg

so today I tried to use the magnum steel at the bequest of my mother and it failed miserably. When I tried to drill it out, the bit cocked over and ripped the cast piece off. This all leads me to ask what you mean by peening it. I am not the welder but I do want to let the friend who is doing it to know how to do it. What EXACTLY should I ask the guy at the welding supply for as for rod?

the rod 700 weld mold can be found on the net the place weld mold that make the stuff is in mich .peining is done rigth at the time you stop welding .this is done till it cools off with a small ball pein hammer this help relieve stress at the time of welding this may not be much fun in the car.you will need a dc welder
