Do I need to use the shallow oil filter on the SBC?
The spec sheet says to use parts for 93 caprice and it calls for the small (shallow) filter. I would like to use the tall filter if possible. More is better? I have plenty of room since the headers were installed. I routed the downpipe away from the filter so the larger one would fit.
Would this change anything except the amount of oil for the filter?
As long as the filter seals properly and flows correctly, that shouldnt change much. As for the "is more better" question, not really. All your doing is increasing the amount of contact area inside the filter. It'll still get dirty, and it will still have to be changed as regularly. So its a flipped coin.

I do believe more is better for oil filters. The bigger filter has more surface area for filtration to occur, so there will be less of a pressure drop through the filter. There are more places for the dirt to stick. And the added oil capacity is nice, too. More oil is always better.
I agree w/ the fellow '76 owner , more surface area is better,in
a filter. If can do, then do.
I own a '92 caprice that calls for the short filter AC Delco PF454. I've never put one of those on there, always used the taller filter AC Delco PF1218.
Done the same with my old 2.8 v6 camaro, the stock filter was a PF45 (I think) but I always used the taller PF52 that is used on the 4.3v6 and 4x4 full size trucks.
taller, shorter.........both nice concepts but I think the material and brand of filter also very important..........I stay away from Fram.:D
dont use FRAM.... and use the larger filter.. bigger is better IMO when it comes to oil filters

longer filter more cleaning area, BUT it also depends on what filter u use. not all filters are created equal. here's a Google search on oil filter testing and here's a good site along w/this one that talks about what filters are good & which are junk. then its up to u to decide which is best for u....joe

I always have used ACDelco parts when I can.

As crazy as it sounds, speaking as a ford huy that has worked in dealerships changing alot of oil on all makes and models, Motorcraft makes a filter for that engine that is "supposed" to be one of the best on the market. It (so I was told by the old men in the shop) has a silicone check valve in it to prevent backflow, and filters to a smaller micron size than most aftermarket filters. Be it wrong or right, I have used motorcraft filters on everything from a subaru to a toyota, and have always found oil particals to be very low if non-existant. JMO

Very interesting.......can I make myself reach for that Motorcraft filter......need to research more......Thanks for the info.;)
