ok tell me what you guys think...I really like this idea

305 v8 bored .060 with a flat top piston, a high end rod, a set of 305 truck heads, a mild rv style lunati cam ( or i might put a REAL fat cam in)...this is where it gets fun


fabricate a dual sided intake manifold, on 1 side a supercharger off of the 3.8L cars (tbird, the buicks, ect.), on the other side, a supercharger identical to the other one...twin superchargers...here's where it gets REAL fun

mechanical fuel injection, running methanol

I know, i know...why that much power on a little engine with methanol injection? because its different thats why, because the look i get when people see that i blew their 454 out of the water with a 305, because of the satisfaction i'd get off of making this much power on a 305.
I'd also put MSD stuff on it (ignition system, timing stuff, ect.)

Nobody has ever been successful trying to make mechanical fuel injection work on the street, particularly not with alcohol.

Blower Drive Service can convert your mechanical to electronic using all the mechanical pieces, so it still looks hot.

what would it accomplish to make it electronic? i dont have anything to plug it into...There wont be a computer on the car, thats why i dont just by EFI...

I really dont need info about the injection...i just thought id throw that in there...i really need to know about how good the superchargers would work

i can also run gasoline, it doesn't matter...we're just thinking about going drag racing with an alcohol injected truck...

You could run 2 Eatons, guys have run 2 blowers before. Just build a good, stout short block.

instead of splitting the intake down the middle longways, i could split it crossway and run a dual carb style intake and run 1 supercharger per carb yes? lemme know.

Sure, in theory it'll work.

If you're goin with carbs, you'll need 8:1 to 8.5:1 to make it work, so you may have to re-figure on your flattops and use dished pistons.

hmm what about using high octane fuel? for example, 93 octane? would that work? I can also get 110 octane from the pump but its almost 4 dollars a gallon... i would rather not go there :)

If i need to change pistons thats not big deal...it'll just save me money in that area too :)

If you're doing it for different you're way too late. Here's Dobbertins J-2000 about twenty years ago. And it's twin turbo'd as well as the twin Magna Chargers.............yes, it ran.

I've got close to the same set up your thinking. My 305 is bored .060 over with flat top pistons, crane cam edelbrock manifold with 600 cfm carb and just with that I have to pump 93 gas. That combo is putting out a little over 290 HP so with dual blowers, your talking about one hell of alot of power from a small block but as tech says, It can be done.

guys im not stupid, i know dual chargers have been done before and i know that it was done for the first time a VERY long time ago...i already know that...what im talking about when i say "different" is that no one in my town has this setup...they all think 350 or bust and thats not true.

I really need help fabricating the intake for a dual supercharger setup...any input or maybe even a DESIGN for one would be a lot of help...also what are my options for this setup as far as fuel goes?

mechanical injection is one option but what are the others?

and as a matter of fact it IS different...how many street machines out of the millions of them out there can you say are double charged with a custom intake? ok now take that number and sort out the number of LITTLE v8's that have had this done and i bet you don't have a very large number...

anyways, i haven't committed to this project yet, i just wanted to throw it at the club and see what support and info i could get on it. I know a twin charged engine makes a ton of power but i could REALLY use a design on what the intake is supposed to look like and what type of fuel system i would be best off using. thanks!

Tech hit it right on the head. Not trying to burst your bubble but now's time for a reality check. How deep are your pockets? Depending on your boost levels your looking at things like: steel crank, the good rods you mentioned, line boring, 4 bolt main caps, premium forged blower pistons (for a less than popular motor), final honing with a deck plate, O Ringing the block, HD oiling system, premium rod bolts/main studs, and a bunch of other little items I'm overlooking, and thats just the bottom end. The alternative is to keep putting engines under the blowers.

u guys are right...im in over my head on a dream...i just need to stop talking nonsense and just rebuild the wimpy 305 that is in the truck and make it a good daily driver and just stop talking hotrod stuff.

or maybe a good stout 305 and one supercharger on it...or blower/turbo or supercharger/turbo

i dunno prolly just need to stop dreaming about going fast and just drive the truck how it came from the factory.

There's nothing the matter with deaming, if the truth be known it's start of most projects. Some just occasionally need to be put on hold.

well here is what i have:

30 yrs drag engine building experience helping me (girlfriend's dad) he told me if i came up with what i want, he'd help build it but he wouldn't help me with an idea.

2 305 blocks, 2 305 cranks, 1 set of factory 305 truck heads, 1 set of factory pistons, rods, ect. Factory TBI setup...(one 305 is assembled and running in the truck but its getting tired)

i want to use the 305, make good torque and hp, have a very sexy street machine, but at the same time not be in one of those 350 or bust guys.

I have really no rules on this project other than it has to make good power, it has to be a 305 (or a version of it) and it must be streetable. Lemme know...

also incase of any confusion, i was talking about running 2 small chargers, like the chargers that came factory on the tbirds (3.8 v6) together the two chargers make about the same amount of boost as 1 charger that is meant for the engine...

As the other guys have already stated, anything can done, if you throw enough $$$ at it. If I understood you correctly, you have a grand to get started with... this should buy a set of blower pistons, rings & wrist pins. If you want a BIG horsepower engine that is a reliable pump gas street driver & are on a budget, a 305 is not the way to go.

Big inches and torque is normally a lot cheaper than mouse motors with a lot of horsepower..........JMO

i dont exactly want BIG torque and hp...i just want stout, grunt, GRRRRR!

im not looking to make a 500 hp motor... I want a mouse motor that says ROAR!!! not BOW TO ME I AM GOING TO RIP YOU IN 1/2!

anyways, id like to bore it do whatever i need to it to make it a low 300 hp engine...I know this is possible because there are TONS of builds for 300 hp 305's...That is what i NEED right now and then later i can do something else... Later i can add the artificial aspiration to it. or rebuild the 305 and spend a little money on it to make it into a 300 hp motor and then let my money accumulate over the next year or so and drop a big block into it and buy something else to drive everyday.

now that being said, anyone have any good ideas for a 300-350 hp 305?

Ok this is not what your going to want to hear (don't mind me I have a tendency to do that :whacked: ). $1000 isn't going to go very far period.

First thing is to check the condition of the parts you have. If the crank can get by with polishing, the cylinders aren't worn or tapered to the point where the block needs bored you might get it done for a grand. Check your prices locally, but here's about what your realistically going to find. Your heads are going to need guides and a valve job, the block will need to be vated and new cam bearing installed. The block deck and heads need to be checked for warpage and milled as necessary. The rods should be check and will likely need to be resized. Now buy a quality overhaul kit, add in the timing chain, new oil pump, sealers, assembly lube and fluids and you might have just enough left over for a cam and lifters. When all is said and done you have a pretty stock overhauled 305.

If your looking for the best bang for the buck, check the various dealers in your area (you'll likely find the prices do vary) on a 350 crate motor; just the plain bread and butter 350 2 bolt main version. Yes you'll have to add a little bit to your $1000 budget, but bottom line there is no replacement for displacement. At this point you will be starting with a NEW motor with a warranty that will make more power in stock form than your 305 can ever hope to do without spending 2 to 3 times your $1000 budget.

It comes down to economics at this point, yes you can build a 305 to some impressive levels if you want to and have deep enough pockets, but the bigger and better you start with the better off your going to be.

I dunno...I refuse to drop a 350 in...its just too common and i don't like it.

Now a special 350 i might go for...a trick like 350 block and stuff but put something special in that sets it apart from the 350's...

I'm still curious as to how a 350 with 305 heads, 305 computer with a little bigger injector would work out...Like put a 350 in using 305 heads, holley's 5.7L TBI and the 305 computer...

Since a 305 and a 350 are the same appearing on the outside, why not use a 350? The 305 has inferior heads, a wimpy crank, etc.....not ideal performance. If you want a smaller motor, build a 302 or a 327 (late model mains)......

I had an 85 K10 that came with a 305 4bbl. I tried all the crap with a cam, etc. Then, I put a 350 in it.....completely different truck. Much more fun to drive and it got better mileage. The thing was a 4 speed.

The only reason to use a 305 is because you have one. However, be reasonable....the only $$ you save are the block, crank, and head cores if you have to buy new pistons, etc.

Not many points earned from your friends by telling them "it's a 305!"

i understand that im not going to make a ton of power off of a 305, i just really don't want to be like everyone else saying "i got the 350..."

its just not any fun to be the same as the rest of the crowd...

I'm thinkin about selling my silverado anyways in favor of an s10...put a v8 in an s10...that would be a load of fun...or i might go for a car instead, if i don't have a full size truck then there is no point in me having a truck...Maybe a nice 3rd gen camaro with a 350 TBI in it or something. If i build the 350 with the $1000 that i have, then sold my truck, bought a shell (because shell cars are cheaper than cars with a powertrain in them already), dropped the engine into it...

only talking about 2 weeks worth of down time in the process so it probably would work.

For $2000 I got an almost rust free 1972 el camino with a 350/350 combo

it has a 12 bolt rear end, all the glass is good, the interior is in need of help (seat and door panels). The headliner is good, and the dash is fair.

The th350 is brand new, just rebuilt with 15 miles on it (just enough to make sure it shifts well and stuff) and the 350 ci engine is in great condition...the only problem i have with it is that it is fueled by a "quadrajunk" but thats easily replaced with a 600 cfm (or so) demon carb...

What do you guys think?
