350 Engine swap?
Im in the process of building a 350 superstreet motor for my 1987 Chevrolet Silverado. I have a few questions about things that are going to be needed to make this truck run strong and steady.
The motor that is in my truck now is a 305. I've been speaking with my girlfriend's father about this. He's pretty well qualified to help me make decisions because of the fact that he builds superstreet/race engines and transmissions for a living and he does very well with it.
He and I decided that I would be very well off to build a 350 with flat top pistons, hydraulic cam/lifters. When I asked him about what heads I should go with, he said I had so many options. One option that i submitted to him and he was quite impressed with was using my 305 heads on the 350 sbc and using my T.B.I instead of carburated.
As far as installation goes for the injection, using whats already there is very much easier but I'm wondering if thats a good quality way to go.
Will the 350 sbc with 305 heads and T.B.I injection do well?

It will work, but I don't think it will qualify as a "super street" engine with a TBI.
I've also heard rodders say not to use 305 heads on a 350, but I can't figure out why.I intend to live forever; so far, so good.

I have 305 heads on mine, no knocking, or anything
I run premium unleaded, and it runs fine. I add octane boost for assurance

The 305 heads increase the compression b/c of the small 58cc chambers but there way too low flowing for what you want. Get a set of 64 cc heads from world products or some other company, you'll be happier. You don't know what you've got til it's gone

I decided a new path
Tell me what you think...
I think keep the 305, bore it to 335 and stroke it.
Slap on the Holley GM Truck TBI
World Torquer heads
Flat top pistons (not sure how pistons work with the stroke)
Mild hydraulic cam and lifters
New superchip in my computer to go with the stronger motor
At the end I'll have a torque monster, with a little bit of economy to it. EST. HP would be around 300 i think.
What do you guys think?

Just to make things hard, the Co. that sales the stroker kit also has a stroker kit for the 350 (383)
Also when you buy the stroker kit from Powerhouse it comes with pistons and bearings.

haha very funny gotta make things hard for the noobie
I can get a stroker kit for the 350 but i dont want that much power because power = gas and i dont want paycheck = gas because I like to have spending money!
So that power house kit comes with pistons and rings to fit the stroked motor huh? thats good because we were looking at build kits for the 305 and when we got to pistons it was like "uh oh"
I think we have one on our shop floor that was built for my girlfriends chevelle but she wasnt happy with the power.
I might buy it, pull it apart, clean it, build it, balance it... whatcha think?

Here is the link for the stroker kit so you can see what you get with it:

But you must be doing something wrong, your girlfriend has a 305 and you want to buy it Hope you are going to take it out in trade and not pay cash

nono my girlfriends dad has a 335 stroker motor already built but it has been awhile since its been run so i thought about pulling it apart, cleaning it, putting it back together and sending it off for balancing.
he didnt use a kit like that though, he bought different pistons and didn't use the 5.7 rod.
I dunno what im gonna do. TOO MANY CHOICES TO MAKE A GOOD ENGINE!!
Here's what i want, maybe you guys could help me out.
I want a grunt motor. One that grips and rips the concrete. Tons of torque. I want a motor that is a rare combination (something in a vehicle that you don't see or is very different from everyone else), I want a motor that is going to be somewhat economical due to the fact that i have to drive it everyday. I want a motor that i can be proud of because its a finely tuned torque ripping machine.
Lemme know your ideas!
(I also believe in CliffordPerformance.Com's motto when they say "6=8") So bluntly, My powerhouse does NOT have to be 8cyl but it DOES have to make the power that 8 cyl would Trying to stay away from big blocks as well. Thanks!Last edited by Hopper111; 07-22-2005 at 09:54 AM.

Well he!! that is no problem at all, marry her and tell dear old dad to give you the 335 as a wedding gift and that the two of you will run off to get married. You get a 335 that not everyone has, it will have the power you want, and with the bucks you save dear old dad on the wedding he will help you drop it in

WHOOOO!!!!
My mom and dad just gave the ok for me to buy another vehicle of my choice to make a hot rod out of. They just don't want me to hop up my daily driver because if something goes wrong with it, im out of a daily driver. There is a 59 apache for sale in my town...its no motor, no trans, $500 Good body, rust on passenger door. what do you guys think? anyone else got any suggestions on cheap bodies that make good hotrods, on a budget?
so that opens a WHOLE new world to what motor i can go with...this gives me the option of using a big block
I dont have to be concerned with gas milage with my hot rod because i wouldn't have to drive it every day

I saw a Chevy pickup at a show one time that had a Cadillac Eldorado (1970-1976) front clip grafted on. Front drive and 500 cubic inches, yeeeaaaahhhh buddy.PLANET EARTH, INSANE ASYLUM FOR THE UNIVERSE.

The way to go fast for cheap is a strong motor and a lightweight car. That truck will be heavy no matter what. Take a look at these swaps.....

I look on ebay every so often under "project cars" in ebay motors. Lots of times, you'll see a potential roller on there for a couple hundred dollars. For instance, a $300 MGB with a basically stock 350/350 would be enough to put a grin on your face.Last edited by techinspector1; 07-22-2005 at 11:06 PM.

ok but what tranny for a big block car?
Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
