using oil
Well I have now about 7057 miles on a gm crate engine 290 horse 350 cid. And my question is this .... Is 1 quart of oil every 3000 miles acceptable? It seems that the engine should have broke in by now. The number 7 plug drivers side back has developed some deposits on it also, this motor is still under warreny so what should I do? the motor runs ok no miss / backfire etc. It has no leaks anywhere it must be burning it. Sure hate to take it out again. Thanks for the imput guys!!!!

When there is a warranty make sure u have a paper trail, in case that oil consumption doesnt stop. I think that amount is excessive but the only way to protect yourself is to take it back, to the builder and let them decide what to do.

You might want to try switching oil to Synthetic high heat oil,,,or try Lucas Oil Stabilizer, before you lose it all to-gether, lots of guy's swear by it.

Depending how it was broken in, that could be deemed normal oil consumption by a rebuilder when you're talking warranty. Sure it's not leaking instead of burning?

I have had quite a few engines that would suddenly drop one qt at 3000 miles. I would then change the oil, filter, and go another 3000 miles. I do not actually consider that all that unusual. I have had quite a few new engines do similiar things.
Is there another reason you might be questioning the rebuild? It might be me, but I consider 3000 miles time for a change anyway. That has always been my way. My new 383/350 does the same thing. 3000 miles, down about one qt. I feel pretty comfortable with that.
The vaccum leaks I had to chase are another story. Sloppy fittings, line ends, warped carb base. The oil was quite in line withe what I consider "normal".

well went today and checked all the plugs and the only one in question was number 7 with deposits on it. Can a leaky intake cause oil cumsumption? just a thought?
