283 supercharged???? questions

well hey people.. i have a 1950 chevy pickup with a .. relatively stock block but with a bore .60 over... headers, holley contender intake, holley 600 cfm carb.,HEI, all backed by a 700 r4 transmission... this weekend i will be getting my rear end back from my friend who is putting the set of 4:10 gears in the back and i have now started to accumulate some mone... i am extremely serious about a supercharger being put on ( of course with me being a recent 18 year old.. and i am wondering what kind of suggestions you would have for supercharging... i could possibly get a weiand 6-71 for cheap but then i would have to purchase another carb and get worse gas milage.. i know i dont really have that much of a choice but i know that i want it all under the hood.. ive also seen the 6-71's fit under my style chevy pickup hood before... i have also come accross a compete small block chevy vortech setup... it has a carb box, all the tubing and hardware, a whole front runner setup, and it wouldnt sit any higher than your basic carb setup which is cool.. now this runs about 2600 bucks and im really thinking on getting it... i know that i would have to remove my inner fender wells or just do some modification to them.. which wouldnt be hard so im just wondering what you people would think, and how you think it would react to the little 283... i also have a bare 350 sitting waiting to be built... the 283 stock, with 2 bbl carb manifolds, and th 400 tranny ran a 17.4 haha sad.. but after all the mods there is a dramatic increase... and im looking for more.. let me know what you think.. any comment would be appreciated!!! thanks!!

Beautiful lil' truck! The Vortec is a good setup, relatively trouble-free, less boost than a Jimmy, but less stress on the engine. A 6-71 is too much for a 283, 4-71 better. Arkus Duntov put a 4-53 on a 265 back in 1955 or '56, and it worked great.
I've got 40 years on you, and yours is as sweet a truck as I've seen.

A suggestion . . . pull that photo down and resize it.

6-71 aint to much for a 283:LOL: just make sure you have breathers THAT WORK. you could always get a 142 mini blower.

A 4-71 would be a better choice than a 6-71 for a 283 if you're going with a roots-style blower. Pull the motor apart and install some dished 8:1 blower pistons.

A centrifugal such as the Vortech would work nicely too, but you're still gonna have to change to dished pistons or cylinder heads with larger chambers to lower the c.r.

Personally id go with a roots type blower, reason being is that with a blower with a boxed in carb is hard to adjust and judge and is basically a pain in the a$$, just my opinion. also you need a fuel pump and a regulater designed to overcome the pressure created by the blower. Id go with a 6-71 blower, underdriven...alot but really id build the 350 you have for the blower. Roots type superchargers arent as efficient as centrifugal types but when you are using that box around the carb its a b!tch
to adjust and set up for when the blower is boosting. Let us know how it works out for you.

supercharging a small block is a great way to use up some of those otherwise useless smog heads that everyone has laying around. Put a set on that 283 and drop the static comp down to 7:1 or so, and pack the boost to it! Talk about a mouse that roars!

Open it with MSPaint then from the menu Image\Stretch-skew and type in 50% vertical and horizontal to reduce it half size.

Use the 'Crop' tool to get rid of the unnecessary background.

Then you can edit your post and replace the picture with the smaller image.

Ha - I know the computer stuff - its the hot-rodding I gotta get a handle on - :D .
