new 350 4 bolt 300 hp crate from dealership
hi i am new to this sight and have some problems with my new 350 4 bolt in my 64 chevelle/ elcamino. i put all new parts on and have heating problems. for example, it heats up to 200-207 on surface streets and then i get on the highway it will reach 215-217. it has 2 electric fans 16 inch, a pusher and puller. i have the new edelbrock permistar long water pump,new radiator(not alluminum) and all new hoses. 180 thermistat. now i am old school and i remember the 350 running alot cooler than that. some people tell me that these new motors run hot. can anyone help?

Check your timming settings. The less advance you have the hotter the engine will run.
Also, when you installed the motor did you check it for air pockets when you filled it up?
Might want to get someone to put a vacume on the rad to make sure you got only water in the system.

Did you run it with only one fan, it is possible, you may have a restriction in air flow at speed due to the two fans. Carlg

does the pusher fan have a shroud on it?
If so, take the pusher off and see what happens at speed.
On the highway, you shouldnt need a fan. Also, make sure you dont have the fans working the wrong way.....it has happened before. They cool at low speed but on the highway, they oppose the natural air flow.

sounds like the fans are blocking the air. take one off and try it.Mike

I am not sure WHY you would need 2 electric fans on a 350/300 engine?

If you use two fans, you surley dont want them working against each other. If you had one fan on one side of the radiator pushing air into the engine compartment and one fan on the other side of the radiator pulling air into the engine compartment that would work. If you have a 4 row radiator, put a 160 deg thermostat in it. Also there are several aditives you can use. I like the 40 below, you just use it and water. Cool's real nice.Chevys for life

i had a similar problem and realized that it was rust in my cooling system. the block that i had used had sat up for a few years and once it ran, the rust got all in the system and i overheated.
i flushed it very well using flushing agents from the auto parts store and now it runs cool.

It seems an engine driven fan with a good shroud would more than handle the cooling needs, why all the electrics???Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
