375 Horse was the L84 engine with FI. The last small block Chevy production engine with 2 four barrels was the 1961 270 hp 283. In 62 they started to get serious with carburetors and the same engine with a 1 point boost in compression made 300 hp with 1 carb. :whacked:

Libertysyclone Us old timers do go back along ways but I'd give anything to be young again and be able to bend over longer than 10 minutes or crawl under a vehicle without my back hurting.:D

What carbs will accept a blow through application?

A couple corrections here
1 -- 1961 was the last year for the 283 engine in a corvette. It came in two 2--4bbl. options. one with 245hp.with a hydraulic cam and 270 hp. with solid lifter cam.
2-- The reason the 62 had so much more horsepower is that was the first year for the 327 and for 64 & 65 you could get a 327 with up to 375hp. Not after that.
3-- For the most part the 327 and the 350 --Do Not-- share the same block. The 62 thru 67--327 has a small journal crankshaft. A 350 never had a small journal crank and they are not interchangable.
4-- In 68 & 69 the 327 went to the large journal crank and in some cases the 327 and the 350 did share the same block.
5--If my memory serves me well in 1968 you could get 4-bolt main 327-350 hp in a corvette.
6--You --CAN-- build a 4-bolt main 327 using using the 4bolt 350 block with large journal 327 crank and pistons. the large journal 327 rods are the same as the 350 rods.
7--A lot of people like the small journal 327 with the 2-bolt main better than the large journal,and a large number of them came with a steel crank. Many think the small journal will turn up quicker. I think that may be true. Years ago I had a 12.5 to 1
331 cubic inch in my stock car and I would twist it out of the frame. Never any problem with the 2 bolt main.
8- It is my opinion that your friend would have lots of fun with a nice 350-360hp.--327 in a 71 nova.
Remember---Moderation---Not too big on anything! cam,carburation,valves,headers,exhaust,etc,etc,etc.

The small block chevy, especially the early models, is proberly the only ones that I can claim I have a fair amount of knowledge on. Many of you have a far better overall knowledge,but we can all learn from each other. Anytime I get away from the small block ,it's a feel my way thru it sorta deal.:whacked: :whacked:
