I am sure that my timing is set at 10 degrees btdc. I did it according to a previous post. I turned the engine and watched the intake valve open open and close. I brought the line up to 10 degrees. I have my distributor marked for #1. I reached in the distributor hole with my screwdriver. I checked the position of the oil pump fitting and turned it to match closely to the distributor. i dropped the distributor in and seated it. I made sure the rotor was pointing at the mark I made on my distributor and I tightened it down. Then I adjusted the lifters according to a previous post. According to the post then turned it one revolution to #6 TDC. before I start it tomorrow I'll pull the cap to make sure I'm pointing at 6, but if everything I did up to this point is correct then it will be pointing at 6. and that's how it's sitting now.

im not sure you know where the valves are. forget the valves if you got all the slack out of them. turn the motor over with your finger over the #1 hole untill the comp. blows it off. move the timing pointers to 0 on the HB. then tell me where the rotor is.

what sucks about doing it that way Is I have have to use a 5/8 deep well on a 1/2 in ratch and do it one handed until I feel compression and the sob ends up slipping off and I take the skin off my hands on the fan motors and power steering pump. When I see the intake valve open and close I put my finger over it and I feel compression

put something in the hole like a rag. something that cant keep going. once you feel the comp. how far do you have to move it to line up the marks?

Did you rotate the distributor like I said to check if the spark is in the right place? I hate that you are trying to chase around everyone's ideas, but everyone is really trying to help you. Everyone also has their own techniques on this sort of problem. I would have liked to have had you set the timing at around 12-14 degrees BTDC, but 10 will probably do it. It may be a little slow. It does make a difference. If it is set at TDC and aligned up with #1 on the distributor cap it will definitely be too slow and hard to start.
I hate to mention it because I don't normally do it, but I am tempted to tell you to use starting fluid rather than a choke or pumping it. Starting fluid is less likely to flood it. It also would not have hurt to have a squirt of oil in each cylinder to enhance the compression. With all the gas that has been in there the rings are probably washed down and could cause compression to be slightly low. I wish that I could be there with you to help start it.

i can set the timing at 12-14 not a problem I'm getting pretty good at dropping that distributor in. when I usually start feeling compression the line is underneath the water pump or just starting to get on the scale, but I'm not sure I never really paid attention. I do know that the balancer isn't off. Before I disassembled everything I checked for compression with my finger, lined it up to 0 and the camshaft and crankshaft was at 12 and 12

It sounds to me like you are on the right track. I really hope things work out for you on this. Man, It is sometimes so difficult to talk someone through something like this. Difficult to convey ideas. Good luck,

firebird45331 you cant do this 2 dif ways and Hurst01 thinks you're doing ok, and i think you;re no closer than you was yesterday so im gonna move on and let Hurst01 help you with this. no big deal you just need to get the car running and you need to hook up with one person and i dont do the 12 degrees thing and thats the way you're headed. either way is ok. later :cool:

Lt1s10, You have been doing this pretty good so far. I accomplished what I was trying to do on explaining to him how to adjust the valves. I have been putting too much time in this anyway and neglecting other things.

i dont know about how good a job, and i dont care who helps him but it need to be one preson and he need to buckel down and get it done. this is a 15 min. job that going on for days. firebird45331 ill help if you want me to but if i do its gonna be my way or no way. no hard feeling if you dont like the deal. but you gotta talk to me more than you have. let me know. :cool:

Thanks everyone for their help I greatly appreciate it. and after it's all said and done I'm a wiser person. A friend came over and we were working at it and both stumped. We decided to look at the timing again. and it was correct. Now here's what was wrong. APPARENTLY gm's distributor for my year turns exactly opposite as what I was used to, Ford. So yeah the firing order was correct but it was going ass backwards around the distributor. So now it runs. We adjusted the carb. Cam sounds pretty good, not as radical of an idle as I thought it would be but you can hear it. Lifters never even ticked once. Smoked like an SOB at first, but then it went away. Had some vaccum leaks around the intake, tighted it down more and rechecked it. They're all gone. I tried something new. I ran straight water with rust inhibitor. Doesn't seem to run any hotter or cooler. I let it run at 2000 rpm for 20 minutes to break in the cam. All in all today was a good day. Next step for me is to get my headers on and look for a posi. Again Thank you everyone. I greatly appreciate it. And I'm sure I'll have more questions. And all in all I'm more educated and reassured that a lot of what I did was right, that I just lacked confindence.

im glade you got it going,you need to go back up about 2 days ago i tried to get you to tell me what way the rotor turned and you wouldnt answer the ? if you had we would have found the problem. glade you got it going. :HMMM:

I wuoldn't have found it. I had the wires off and on about 14 different times and it wouldn't have made any difference cause I kept putting them on wrong. I was ASSuming the distributor turned counter clockwise. I need another set of eyes. My friend was like dude you're going the wrong way. Again obsceneties flowed through my mouth immediately follow by you've got to be kiddin me. and a few more obsceneties.

this was my post on june,9 -2005 i never got a answer, you would have told me you was wiring it counter clock wise and i would have said "wrong" and you would have said awh sh** and then fixed the car.

if you learned anything it should have been the next time pick one preson that you belive knows what he is doing and let him help you.
