any idea of hp?
got a 74 camaro, thinking of swapping that engine into it. Maybe upgrading tranny. Is that good engine build up or should I stay away. Its used engine someone selling locally.Quote:

Boy oh Boy this stuff adds up to a ton of HP :rolleyes:
HP is made in the combustion chamber and results from the combination of chamber design, compression ratio, valve size, valve opening (cam specs), induction and exhuast. You know all those things you fail to mention.
Basically anything other than putting it on a Dyno is a guess.
Sounds like you need a set of heads, a cam, and a valve train to go with it......
What does it have?

Dont know where you got this from , .020 pistons are available from almost every piston manufacturer, and they would not still be making them if there were no demand. Do you really think 355ci has any significant advantage over 353.3 ci. A lot of people ,when they build a motor dont want to bore that block any further than necessary for that rebuild.It may also allow them to get one more major rebuild out of that block.
One thing we were in total agreement on was , I couldn't tell if he had Trick flow heads or trick flow valve covers.

I know full well that .020 pistons are still available. I also know that every now and then a person might want to bore one to that. However, most people don't. It used to be much more common to bore one .020. I have even seen engines rebuilt by Jasper that had only one hole bored .040. That also used to be standard practice, but not any more.
This post is the first time I have heard af any one boring one to .020 for years.
As far as saving the bore to bore it out later, how many times would an engine need boring anyway?
Momo, you need to find out more information about the engine, other than it is shiny. So far you haven't given anyone any information as to how to determine what kind of HP it could have.
Valve covers, water pump and fan blades don't make engines fast.

How are those Merc blocks? Are they pretty thick walled? Talking about blocks, I still have this 250 Chevy block sitting in my garage. I am trying to decide on whether to use it or build a nice 383 or something. Everyone keeps telling me that a 383 would be cheaper because all I have is the block and nothing else. The head is sitting in a friends car and he was supposed to bring it by weeks ago but haven't seen em....

Yeah good idea... I thought about finding a 327 motor. I get kind of tired of the same old 350 and 383's. A friend has a 327 pushing over 400 horses, it's a nice race engine but it's sitting in his garage not getting used.
