I've been to the Mortec page, and I'm trying to find the casting number on my small block. Here's a shot of what I can see on the drivers side, right up against the firewall, looking straight down. Where is the actual number? Thanks for any help.

It's right above the bell housing on the drivers side. That looks like the area but all I see is the casting clock which, if you know how to read it, will tell you the block year but I don't know how to read them so, I can't tell you that.

Check on the lip at the right front of the block. It is a machined surface of the block, it should have some stamped numbers on it. Probably directly behind and below your alternator. A booger to see and get the numbers, but the most accurate way of determining what the motor actually is.
Thanks, Dave. I did get a number from that lip area, I think it is the engine id code, not the casting number. I found this page: http://www.nastyz28.com/spmenu.html so my ID code is V0524TJZ, which means Flint, May 24, 1973 truck engine, but I still don't know if it's 2 or 4 bolt mains. The heads are 1972 3998933, very common 76cc heads from what I read. Any other place I should look for the actual casting number?
hmmmm I'm not a chebbie guy, haven't messed with them for years. Thought there was another stamped number on the same pad that would tell you what vintage and horsepower the motor was. Hopefully the chebbie guys will be along to offer some help.
