283 Harmonic Balancer - HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a 1964 Impala and pulled the 327 out of it and dropped a 283 in to get me on the road.

The 327 harmonic balancer uses a bolt to hold it to the crank.

The 283 does not have a hole in the crank and the harmonic balancer from the 327 may be too large for the 283 since the outer diameter will hit the timing mark tab.

How does the harmonic balancer mount to the crank on the 283? Just it just get "Pounded" on? Will it stay on? What size balancer do I need?

What size balancer do I need? Should I get a Harmonic Damper. Anyone have one for sale? If I buy one used, does it need to be rebalanced?

Any information will help, this is the only thing from getting me on the road!

Arent 283's internally balanced, and not use dampers?

Damn it streets. Now you tell me to tap it with the engine off. I broke off my tap and the tap handle is now wedged in the radiator. I don't want to pull it out because it might leak. Well I'm gonna fire it up again and use a carbide drill to drill out the broken tap.

ive currently been having trouble with my 283 and its harmonic balancer even though these motors are balanced internally i have found that the 283 ( cast iron crank ) and 327 ( forged crank ) to be using the same type of balancer now the real problem lies in the fact that the 283 had a press on balancer and if you start to change parts like a healthier cam that the internal balance then becomes slightly different so the simplest cure is to drill and tap the end of the crank. good luck to all the guys who haven't given up on 283's

ok just a quick ? on the dampers i got a 327 with a 350 damper on it will it hurt the crank in anyway? is it a good idea to change the damper back to the 327 or stay with the 350?
