Timing mark for 327 ?
MY 28 ford has an early production 327. There was a front seal leak. After taking it apart there was no harmonic balancer and the hub was beat up from the last owner beating the hub on with a hammer instead of using the proper installation tool. The local speed shop suggested a 6 1/4 inch aftermarket Harmonic balancer for SB chevy. They said without it I could hammer out my bottom end bearings. So I installed the new one but noticed that the timing mark for TDC is slightly different than the old hub. The old hub had TDC almost inline with the key whereas the new one is slightly to the left. I have the engine running well but my question is what it the best way to re-align TDC ? I bought a new pointer for TDC which is adjustable. I took the plug out and can see the piston on # 1 come to the top of the stroke but there is still a few degrees of rotation on the crank before you see the pison start to go back down. I figure there could be about 5 degrees of rotation either way. Does anyone know how many degrees difference there is between the old 327 hubs and the new ones ?
I saw last night on fb about John. The world sure lost a great one. I'm going to miss his humor, advice, and perspective from another portion of the world. Rest in Peace Johnboy.
