Take out the #1 sparkplug and put your finger over the hole. Rotate the engine by hand. As the damper comes up to #1 TDC, you'll feel compression trying to push your finger off the spark plug hole.

if you want to pull the driver side valve cover?.....if you watch the number 1 cylinder valves when the timing mark (while turning the engine) is reaching near zero....if the vavles move....your on #6...if they don't it's #1

Also if the distributor is in the engine...pull the cap and see the local of the rotor it will either point to the number 1 or the number 6 wire...

ty guys, yeah my problem was that even thogh i marked where the rotor was supposed to be i still managed to drop it back in wrong and i had just had my heads converted from push in studs to screw in so my rockers were not yet properly adjusted but thanks to mr rifle there i was able to get the piston where i needed it to both drop the distrubutor and wire it correctly and adjust my rockers. So thanks yet again for the help guys
