i have a 1964 283 the stroke is stock and the bore is 3.97 i have on it 461 double hump heads with a high lift cam high rise intake (edelbrock torquer) and a holley 4160 600cfm are there any guesses as to how much hp i have it was out of a truck and i think it had around 180hp stock i was thinking i now have around 290hp at the crank what do you guys think kinda a dumb question but i cant exceed 300hp because the motor is going in a porsche 914 and this stock 901 transaxle will not hold very much hp so i have to keep the hp to a minimum until i have the money for a 930 transaxle i figured that the 283 would be a good choice

thats the thing i havent finished the motor yet but before i finish it i want to know what i can expect just a rough number as far as the cam i have no clue i took a micrometer and i had 2 cams i measured them and took the bigger of them they are stock chevy i had someone say the big one looked like it came from a corvette. the carb is set up the same way it was from the factory i havent fooled with it yet it was on my 327 for a week but that motor was trashed (cracked cylinder wall) so i got the 283 and used the heads off the 327 everything on the motor is GM except the carb and intake manifold i also had the heads worked valves ground and block honed and boiled i will have the 283 in this weekend and will run a compression test

its hard to say about the HT like mrmustang said but 250 would be a good guess. the trans. axle will hold up fine if you don't go around snatching it every time you take off. keep the dif. loaded when you start off. the play or slack between the ring gear and pinion is what brake things.:HMMM: **) **)

I would think you would want to know what camshaft You have . It sounds like you dont know weather you have a solid or a hydraulic lifter cam. You can find the numbers on most camshafts, many have the name and grind# stamped on the end of the cam. Use Your amagination and do a little research . You can figure out what you have. Most 461 heads had 1:94 / 1:50 valves But some had 2:02 / 1:60 valves . Who knows, You may even have 461x ,which are the best . Do You have Flat top pistons ,dish or Dome piston. What piston is it ? Whats the part # ? What is the rated compression of the piston? Oh, the head , the number and build date is on the head surface under the valve cover.Now is the time for You to figure out what You have. Right this minute You have a P I G in the Poke as some southerners would say. Are we being ugly? I dont think so ! Just trying to get You to do it the right way. Good Luck!

ok i had a cam from my 327 and one in my 283 i took my micrometer and measured them both the one that was in the 283 had a higher lift than the one out of the 327 so naturally i used it i think it is a hydraulic becaus the lifters in the 283 were hydraulic there are no numbers on the cam either i looked beleive it or not i am not a total dumbass i know to look for numbers on things before you ask stupid qusetions i did look for an answer on the cam and couldnt find one so i came here if i had a way to find out i would have all i know is that the cam in the 283 had a much higher lift than the one in the 327 also i have flat top pistons and i am sure the heads are 461 because i looked under the valve covers and got the number and ran it

Measuring the lobe won't tell you when the valve opens - how fast the valve opens - how long it stays open - or when it closes. That's why you need the cam specs. if you want to know what cam you have or how much H.P. you may have. Now's the time to find out before you put the engine together. I would take the cam to a GM dealer or a machine shop to see if they could help you identify it.

the machine shop was the one that told me it was out of a corvette the GM dealership had no clue they usually dont

There is a machine, I think its called a cam doctor, most performance engine shops have one. Here they charge about $40 to tell You everything You need to know about your cam.They will give you a printout with all the cam specs. As Pro 70 told You , Your measurements dont amount to squat.I know You dont want to do this ,But , I would guess neither cam is worth 40 bucks. The smartest thing You can do is CAN BOTH CAMS and buy youself a new cam and lifters. Never put old lifters on a new cam. Also make sure you valve springs will handle the cam you select. Remember , Dont go too big on the cam. No one thinks You are a Dumbass , You just need help! and all of us are trying to give you the best help we can. P.S. I was just looking in Summit, page 144. You can buy a Summit cam and lifters for $79.95 . I wouldn't go much larger than a part # sum-k1103 for your application. Also,use a new timing chain and gear set .they dont cost much either. thanks guys im only 16 and i just trying to save money i am on a tight budget and have to pay for i all my self i just bought new lifters and pushrods for it.
