327-311
iv got a 327 i want to rebuild for my 1986 comaro, im wanting a motor that will rap fast and still have the power to turn the wheels. i have herd form some other guys that if you put a 283 cam and some other exponits it will make it into a 311 i just wanted to know if any of you know what im tlakin about?

There has been quite a bit of discussion about 283's the last few months. There are nine threads with comments, some dealing with your question specificly.

putting a 283 Cam in your 327 wont do shit to the displacement.
but a crank on the other hand... i believe you put a 283 Large jounal crank intoa 327 and you get a chevy 302, there two different styles of 302's 1 uses the 327 block, the other a 350 block, not sure but i think they got the same bore... them maybe if you bore it out you'll get alittle bit more displacement.
Heard lots of great things about the 302's ( if u build them properly) has a big bore short stroke, so it'll buzz right up at higher RPM's, heard they are capable off reving up to 8000-9500 RPM, so they're better used in lighter race cars. it would actually work great in my chevette lol, but i already have a 408ci small block for it, right now as it sits, ( no motor or tranny, it weighs in at about 1550-1650 pounds...
small block 575 pounds dont know exactly how mucha turbo 400 weigh's. i'm thinkin maybe 150 or something.. so i'll have a 350 horse 2200-2300 pound car...

i may have rubbed off as a dumb kid who just wants power, and that is true but you know me and my prandpapy are looking for the right engine for me to do some damage on the drag strip, im only asking this, because he realy dont know much about engines except that you need one with good accelleration and power to boost it there, he used to own a speed shop in his younger days. i apriciate all the advice you fellow have gave me!!

Ok what i know is,
a 283's crank in internaly ballanced, doesnt use a harmonic balancer, so you wont been that, but you might have to use a 283's flexplat/ flywheel just when u do this
make sure u get a large journal 283 crank...
thats all i know abotu 283's....

Get all the specs together for a 69 Z28 Camero. They are factory 327 block, 283 crank. They where rated at 290 horsepower from the factory, but in reality where pushing 450 horse power. Factory camshaft was a solid lifter cam. The biggest problem I ever saw with this engine was the fact that they would continue to build RPM's untill they came apart. They will wind to over 9000 rpm. One heck of a great engine for being a 302 cubic inch displacement.

ok, just found this out, if u have a 327 block, you use a small journal crank (283) if your using a 350 block you use a large journal crank...

hmmm
well i personaly think that you shouldnt knock down you cubes on something you wanna drag race. the 302 wasnt made for the drags it had no torqe under 4000rpm. and tore is what you want out of a drag car. the 383 sounds right for what u want.
personaly i want a 302 or A 400 with a 327 crank in it and long rods(348ci). but i dont wanna drag race i want too see how close i can mimic exotic cars like the porshe on the oval useing a domestic car and aftermarket parts. id put a paxton tubo on my 302 to help build low and mid range torqe which is this engines biggest problem.
also the short stroke and long rods mean less piston speed and less engine wear and high rpm this is why i think it would be good for a sports car but the drags i dont think so.
if all you have is the 327 block then id use a small journal 327 crank these were great cranks better then the large journal 327 but this way you'll get a bit more torqe and a better 1/4 mile that 383 though is still by far the best thing for you. or if the 1/4 doest seem so great any more stick a centerfugal super charger on the 302 and build the bottem end up then burn down the highway at 7000rpm doing 160mph hells yeaheven the mona lisa is falling apart
