Where to buy our short block

Ok so here is the scoop. My dad and I purchased a 1968 Firebird to restore. The previous owner put a 454 in it after he blew up the 400 that it had originally. The car has been sitting for 17 years and so the first thing we done is pull the motor. Now my dad and I have been looking on eBay for short block stroker kits 496 or 540. My dad is 67 and an old hot rodder back in the day. So he wants to get a monster motor to put in this without breaking the bank. We found a scat rotating assembly for a 496 without the block for $1300 from Skip white performance I think. They also sell a 540 with a dart block and rotating assembly for around $4500.

So I don’t want to make a grave mistake by getting a crappy kit to build with my dad. If there are better ones out there that have reasonable prices I’m all ears. Of course we are looking for street/strip with this car. I haven’t built an engine in 20 years and my dad hasn’t built one in 40 years. So any guidance is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.
