I don't have the faith in MSD that I used to have. It seems I hear more and more fellows complaining about the product and since I retired, I no longer have my hands in the hotrodding sport, so I have no alternate to recommend other than using an HEI. If I had to build a motor today, I'd probably use an HEI from Davis Unified Ignition (Performance Distributors) products.

If you had to put the timing at 40 degrees to get the motor to run right, then the harmonic damper inertia ring has probably rotated relative to the hub, so that you will need to find TDC and re-clock the ring. Here is a tutorial that I wrote several years ago that outlines the problem and the fix.....

What kind of plugs should I run in my 489 cold plug or hot ,
-
Begin with the plug that the manufacturer specifies for your particular motor. On the ground strap, you will see a color change somewhere on the strap. You want the color change to be right in the bend of the strap, so if the color change is more toward the shell of the plug where the strap is welded on, then you want to move to the next colder plug. If the color change is more toward the open end of the strap, then you want to move to the next hotter plug.
