I have a 1963 Impala with a 409. It has one 4bbl. Every time I add gas to the car it immediately acts like it's running on 6 cylinders. It bucks, surges, doesn't want to idle, and this goes on for about 20 miles before it starts running 'normal' again. The car will run normal until I add gas again. The inside of the exhaust pipes is sooty black indicating it is running rich? I would appreciate any help. This is driving me crazy.
tank vented ?
about 14000 miles on motor; only driven about twice a week; i've had the car since March in which I installed an edelbrock carb; vacuum hoses are ok; gas cap is new vented; no sign of gas leakage around carb; all gaskets look ok; warm year round here. I was told yesterday that it is my metering rods in the edelbrock that are wrong size. That the carb is loading up. What do you think? I appreciate the help.
yes. new stainless tank and it is vented. where is bluff dale? i lived in the Houston area for 44 years
If it were mine I'd rebuild the Carter and sell the Eddy.
That single Carter AFB on 409 was one of my favorite carbs until Holleys developed some improments
And the Ford aircleaner fit them--------
the tank is vented. if I cant figure this problem out I may get a holley. I called edelbrock and the guy said it shouldn't be the metering rods because the carb is only 600cfms. original stock was only 580cfms. and since this is happening when i put gas in the tank could the extra head pressure be putting gas into the carb through the fuel pump somehow?Quote:

Sounds a little like maybe your tank/system isn't vented---faulty cap? is there a sucking sound when you loosen cap?
If its not from fuel system--it could be that the valve stem seals have failed and fallen off the stems----then they block the oil return holes, valve covers fill with oil, loose stems/guides-oil runs down into ports/cylinders fouling plugs on start up after SHORT interval--------if its allowed to set for hours and cool completely off the oil will seep back into the pan---------
is this the only time it does it ? if you pull in from a cruz does it do the same ? i would come in hot and remove the air cleaner to see if it is peculating fuel into the intake.
does it have a Phenolic spacer under the carb. it's loading up when killed hot.
