Head Gasket Options

I have a 560 cu in BBC that filled the #3 cylinder with water. Showed up for a test n tune and car would not turn over. Pulled all the plugs and water poured out of the #3 cylinder. Motor only has idle time and about 10 passes on it and seemed to be running good. Got home and pulled the head and it looks like the head gasket had been leaking since start up as there is rust and some scaring in the cylinder from water sitting in it. I hope a hone will clean up that. The block and heads were decked before assembly and there is no visual defects. I currently am using the multi-layer felpro's which I was told were a good choice. Is there something else better I could use? Motor is over 14:1 if that makes any difference and runs on gas.

nope the mls gaskets work fine used them but i used the f1057 on 14to1 engines as well you need to see were water is coming from check to see if heads not crack under the valve seats

Pat, after removing the head you can see in the cylinder that it was leaking from the lower water jacket on the #1 side of the #3 cylinder. It shows a water damaged path in the cylinder from where it leaked and I hope a hone will clean it up. I have been doing some reading on the mls head gaskets and you need a very smooth surface on both the block and cylinder head. The cylinder head looks to have a visual imperfection in the area it leaked from but it feels smooth. I think I am going to have both the block and head redone very smooth as well as the heads magnafluxed.

Pat, so you recommend the composite ones over the mls? Would that bore size on the f1057 (4.630) be OK with my 4.580 bore size?

i used the mls on many build s the most used gasket i use next to the f1017-1 . deck need s to be smooth but need to be flat just as well . i just used two sets this week . on two big bore bbc .your heads can be black light check with a penetrant /developer on aluminum .but i do a pressure check tells me more my shop i have two mill to deck blocks and heads were in the past i have had great luck with feed+speed =finish on both aluminum and iron parts. and use poly crystal diamond on a breco mill for aluminum

Pat have you used the ICS Titan head gaskets? What do you think of them?

for what your doing you do not need them the mls or felpro for what your doing we used felpros with over 350hp of Nos on 13to1 big blocks chevys do not have much of a problem with head gaskets holding less the block or heads are not flat to start with
