Starter Help!

i have a 87 chevy truck with a 454 big block in it. i am having starter difficulites i believe. i am still in high school and when i park on the parking lot it is on a slight slope and when i am done with classes i come out to start it up it makes a clanging sound twice. almost like it is skipping the flywheel teeth but i have rolled the fly wheel all the way around and no teeth are missing. also took the starter off and no teeth are missing off the gear? can anyone tell me what is causing this? i have no clue of what is wrong. Thanks!

You may need to add a shim to the starter to get it to mesh in the ring gear, When you bought the starter didn't it come with a couple shims??? add one at a time to see what it dose.

it did come with shims but when i put them in it made the starter to far away from the flywheel to get good bite on the flywheel

Well it sounds to me like the starter gear is hitting the ring gear which means it is to hiigh?? There is a way to see what is going on...Remove the flywheel cover. remove the battery cable from the starter. While you are under the truck Looking at the starter have some one turn the key or use a remote button you can then see what is happening with out the starter turning over . DON"T put your fingers in there till you see what is happening and then be very carful

Ill try that! But would it make a difference if it is in a slope compare to level ground. I can have it at my house on the drive way and it won't do it one time but when I'm on a slope it does? It makes no sense to me

My first thought was your starter solenoid is weak, not pushing the starter gear in for solid engagement all the time. How old is your starter? Can't see how the slope can have anything to do with it, but interesting. Coincidental?

MAybe a silly question but;

A- Are the starter bolts tight?
and
B- Is the short support mount installed at the other end?
and
C- Have you manually engaged the drive into the ring gear to visually check the clearances?
