    Help with BBC build

    I am helping my brother in law build a 1980 monza and we are putting a BBC in it. We are wanting to build a 524 ci 454. I was planning on using the stock short deck block. Here is a site that I was looking at when I found the kit http://www.flatlanderracing.com/strokerchev-454524.html

    Can anyone tell me anything about putting a 4.5 crank in a short deck height 454 block? The car will be driven on the street and street legal.

    I did some research on the calculator www.eaglerod.com has and in order to use the 4.5 crank in the short deck block you start with

    deck height = 9.8

    bore = 4.310

    stroke = 4.5

    rod length =6.135

    chamber volume = 115

    gasket thickness .041

    piston dome = 18

    pin height = 1.395

    well in a 9.800 short deck i only used the 4.3/8 cranks max as for the 10.200 tall deck the 4.500 crank is not to bad using the stock truck block .getting back to your 524 cid there is two ways you could go use a 6.385 rod and the piston CH would be 1.165 so lets say 015 for clean up would be 1.150 CH and then using the same for deck clean up with a 6.405 rod your CH would be 1.130 or 1.125 so the 6.385 is not hard to get in H or I beam the 6.405 rod is harder to find and not a cheap rod . you can build a 512 with a 4.375 crank and is not a hard build you may need a custom pistons for the builds i did re work some SRP pistons for this build your CH would be any where from 1.228 to 1.213 when build .you can build this engine but most are happy with a 496 less work and alot of shelf parts .if you use the 4.500 crank the counter weigths will need to be cut down alot to clear the bottom of the piston when it comes around so this build will not go internal and thats ok we built engines this way but it nice to keep all mass in the engine.here is the deal on your build you are trying to get the most cid with a stock block ?but all parts you need for this build less then 1500 gets you a new9.800 block you can bore out to 4.600 and end up with a 565 cid now if you move up to a 10.200 with the same crank at 4.500 you could have a 598 cid throw a 4.750 crank in now you have 632 all are going to cost about the same to build
