Thread: 468ci but what gears?

Just about finished w/ my engine build and wondering if i should change my gears. The cam recommends 3.55-3.90, right now i had 4.10's in my 1 tons. I was thinking maybe deeper?

Besides gear ratio that they recommend---you need to take into consideration tire/wheel diameter as in trucks the sizes vary from 25 in tall to 40?

Ya i forgot to add i'm running 35" boggers. Also the combo is 468, TH350/NP205 w/ 1 ton axles

are you racing that truck or just off roading, my superstock truck also runs 35" boggers and I run 5.13's.

Well it's an offroad toy but i also take it to mud bogs and compete.

Anyone else have an idea?

do you drive it on the highway, if so I would say 4.56 gears max or you will be screaming that engine. but if it strictly an offroader I would go 5.13's or 5.38's, if you are running a corp 14 rear 5.38 is the deepest gear they make I believe. A buddy of mine ran a 468 with 4.10 and 40's but he had a standard. when you consider guys used to pull 15000lb trailers with stock 454's, it isn't that hard to just move the truck along with no weight. Another buddy of mine had a stock injected 454 with 4.56's and 33's, it ran 3500 rpm to do the speed limit and got 6 miles to the gallon. In all honesty if 35's are as big as you plan to run I would stay with the 4.10 for now, you have more than enough torque to go play offroad with 35's.
