i was wanting to get everybodies expert opinion on timing gears,i thought about them for my 396:HMMM:
i used to be a big fan of gear drives until mine wore out and started jumping timing and nearly exploded. DONT USE ONE. get yourself a nice cloyes tru double roller not very expensive but very high quality and long lasting. much more effienct then the gear drive as well.
i have a double roller now
I never had any trouble with them and had one in a motor for several years without incodent. I liked the sound of it, thats the only performance gain from using one, is it sounds faster. Its more of a strictly race application then a street,
i thought it would make the timeing tighter
iit does somewhat but as soon as it begins to wear out it jumps ALOT more then a chain. and they wear out alot sooner. like i said i had one never again,
cool ill just stick with what i have allready thanks
I've heard they are actually bad news for your timing, as it causes all the harmonics from the camshaft to be passed on to the distributor. The timing chain will actually absorb some of these vibrations. But if you use a crank sensor and fire off the flywheel, it gets around that.
