Ok it's tax return time and i have some extra $$ to play with.... I am interested in buying a pretty decent set of streetable bbc cylinder heads. My talldeck 427 is basically stock right now so i don't need anything to crazy....which brings me to my next question. This is my daily driven truck and i don't have time to pull it down right now. Would anyone possibly know what the measurement and type (flat top, dish, etc..) pistons i prolly have so i can look into getting some ???
If you have a tall deck engine (10.200) there isn't a single person on here that could with even 10% possibility tell you what you have unless he built your engine
So there wasn't a standard piston size for the talldeck 427?..........
yep, but it was a heavy truck piston

im absolutely sure. I know the whole history behind the motor. im sure they are heavy truck pistons. the motor came out of a dump truck. i just don't know what the size and type are

I ran a truck block with a 454 ch piston a >400 longer rod .030 over at 460 inches in my P/S chev Monza back in the mid seventies ran 8.002 at 169.98 mph
You will need to use pistons for 454ch with like a Eagle rod that is 6.660 length and then maybe AFR 325cc as cast heads 119cc 2.3 x 1.880 valves.

this is my daily driven truck, im just trying to shed some weight i just want to order some forged aluminium pistons like what i already have. i just want to know what the size should be.
you mentioned streetable cylinder heads----has that part changed???
If you just want to shed some weight, change the water pump and starter and manifold
More weight, change the heads to aluminum
If you just want pistons you will need to measure the bore to see what size 4.250 was stock, if it was ever rebuilt they will be larger, if it hasn't been rebuilt, it probable needs to go .020 or .030 over
the truck pistons aren't as light as the car pistons available but don't look for weight savings in pistons unless you are going to use a shorter piston design
Years ago, Ed Donovan used the truck heads as a core for some high performance stuff by rolling back the chamber wall to sort of a open chamber design even before GM was doing that.

Yeah its in my '81. I really don't think wear is a problem at all. it doesn't use oil or smoke at all. Id rather lose my weight in the crank, but i just don't have the money. I figured if i could lessen some of that rotational mass i cold get some better revs and better economy. Id still like some good heads, i don't have time to pull mine off and have them worked. its my only ride. i dunno...
