    that is a by pass it will just let trash run thru your engine and not thru the oil fitter there is steel washer that pressed in to the block side of the housing that your oil fitter bolts to under that will be your check spring and your flat disc that all should stay in one part. if that was hung open for any time it will let all trash run thru your engine so if you wipe a cam your oil fitter never did its job so all the iron run thru your engine.. it very well be could hurt
