I have had a few of those myself...they are great trucks..
No expert, but am helping a neighbor with a 77 2 wheel drive and a 79 4 wheel drive which the P.O. reall buggered up. I'll help if I can.
iam looking for a 4 wheel drive truck that is really fast but bullet proof.... i have my eye on an engine builder that has a 580 hp bbc that i will mate to a turbo 400 trans. and a 14 bolt rear end..... iam just worried i will start breaking up the truck with that much power
First, there's no such thing as bullet proof...Everything automotive can be broke given the right circumstances and conditions....
Second, if you're talking 580 hp at the flywheel, plenty of good components available to withstand that amount.
Third, it's gonna cost a bunch!!! Takes the right suspension, brakes, fuel system and many other components to make the truck work with 580 horse....Without the right "package" all that horsepower will do little but create a lot of tire spin.
Is this for the street, off-road, or what? Intended usage has a lot to do with the components chosen.....
it will mainly be a weekend warrior...just used for cruise nights and sunday drives
Got to ask, why a 4 wheel drive if it's a cruizer??? Going to be throwing away a lot of horsepower turning all the extra parts, plus the added exense of a transfer case, and another driveshaft and differential....
i got such a good deal on the truck i couldnt pass it up..... i was thinking about just pullin the front drive shaft since i dont 4 wheel it and just run the rear.
Which transfer case is in it? They make a kit for the full time 203 case that gives you 4L 2L N 2H 4H. You still have the added weight but it doesn't soak as much up through the drivetrain.
it has a 205 case in it now

i just want a big wow factor......from people who see it run side by side with cars that are "out of my league".
What size tires are you planning for? I have a K5 Blazer with 44'' TSLs and 6 lug gear. If you keep tire size around 33-36'' and tread lightly on blacktop you should be ok, imo.
the tires are 35" and iam not going any bigger
It sound's like you're pretty much describing my setup. I had 38"s on it but just recently lowered it down to a set of 33"s. I would suggest with that much power upgrading the rear yokes and driveshaft to accept 1410 series joints. They will be stronger with the rear angles and grip if you go offroad any. I would also suggest a Dana 60 if the front end ever goes out but if you aren't going to use a front driveshaft I wouldn't worry about it. The transmission would need beefed up also. Hope this helps.
I had a 77 1/2 ton short box chev with vortec 454/sm 465 /np 205 /d60 up front and a 14 ff out back with 4:56 gears and Detroits. I ran 39.5 boggers and could smoke the hell out of them in 2wd and second gear.I ran long leaf springs off the back of a 89 to get more flex off road but untill i built a traction bar i had wheel hop like mad :whacked: that's how you break stuff.
I kept a set of rear shafts with me just in case but never need one, you can swap them quick on a ff. 14 , just remember to bring a magnet to get the end out of the diff.I'd take out u joints but that was always on rocks.
