Wiring up my BB on test run stand

Got the stand built, got the motor on the stand, now just hooking it all up to test fire it.

I jotted out a primitive diagram for how I think it should all be hooked up - wiring wise. Dotted line between alternator and relay stymies me the most as to whether or not I need to hook it up.

Any input, criticism, suggestions would be appreciated.

should work just fine. I would leave the alternator stuff out as you don't need anything but battery voltage to run it on the stand.

Hey Kayak, don't you need a wire to power-up the coil while the engine is running? I see you are powering the coil from the "I" terminal on the starter solenoid. That terminal only get hot while the starter is cranking. I took the liberty of altering your diagram to show how I would do it differently. Depending on your coil, you may or may not need a ballast resistor, but you definately need a wire from the on-off switch to the hot side of the coil.

Great catch. That's the kind of mistake I was hoping someone would see and correct and help me and my BB get one step closer to firing up.

I'm going with HEI, so no ballast resistor necessary.

Losing the alternator and running a battery charger will be a neat trick. One less turning thingy to not get my tie caught in...hehe.

Will post pics of this beast and my test run stand once it's up and running.

When I wired mine up I done the battery charger trick too. For the coil/spark wire, I ran it to a seperate toggle switch. Flip the switch down and it kills the engine.

Man, that's a beauty of a motor on your test run stand you built there. Seems to me that making these stands is almost like making a mini-rod...without the drivetrain and all.
