Is a 150 shot safe on a stock BBC?

A friend of mine from our local track is waiting for his race motor for his 442 to be finished. He has picked up a stock 455 around a 1976 and he wants to race me with my stock 454 with the peanut ports. He wants to go on the motors and then a 150 shot each. I have a good enough fuel system and know how much timing to take out.

Nitrous is never completely "safe". Fuel enrichment can fail, timing can slip, or most anything could happen. But if all the components are there and working correctly, a 150 shot should be fine as long as the motor is in good shape and not allready half shot.

Thanks Dave, the motor hasn't had many miles on it since it was rebuilt. I will take 8 degrees of timing out and likely run a second pump for the fuel enrichment.

Well, if everything is installed correctly and working properly, should be ok. Nitrous is not at all conducive to long engine life but when used at a moderate level, good fuel enrichment, and the correct timing it should be ok....

.....I ran nitrous on my '84 Camaro & for the fuel supply I put a Jaz 5 Gallon fuel cell up front where the battery was {I had the battery in the trunk}. And then put an electric fuel pump beside it so I just had a totally separate fuel source for the nitrous. I then put race fuel in the Jaz cell but since then I read somewhere that it wasn't good to mix race fuel & pump gas together like that.... oh & I had the timing retarded but I don't remember how much..... Don't do what I did & just keep putting bigger jets in though!! I had a 305 in it, it was fine w/ the 125 jets, fine w/ the 150 jets, ah but the 175 jets? KABOOM!!! No more motor!!!! A stock 305 isn't made for a 175 shot! Bill

Yup, if a small shot is a little bit of fun, then a bigger shot must me more fun, right????? In the pursuit of scientific investigation, we determined a 250 hp shot on a stock 302 with 80,000 miles was a bit much!!!! But man, was it a great explosion, even took the starter off the side of the block!!!!! I'd bought the car for the body, didn't need the engine, and decided to have a bit of fun....
