I have a factory original 454 in my '94 Burb. Is there any way to determine which heads would have been factory installed. (trying to avoid popping the valve cover just to get a number) I would like to find the CC's of the combustion chamber to see if there are other varieties available to increase my compression.
I understand that milling the head and intake is one possibility but would rather do it with combustion chamber size if possible.

Is there such an art as welding up combustion chambers to lower their displacement?
You can get a machine shop to deck your heads. (shave a lil metal off)
That will lower the size of the chamber by a few cc's.
Don't take to much material off as it can make a weak point in the head.

piston to head height (quench) should be 0.035-0.045"
If you have 0.055-0.075"
that should be adjusted before machining the head(s)
