Big Block Build

Hi,
New to this site and building a bigblock for my 69 Camaro

I have the oppurtunity to get a 502 MARK V block. Everything I've read is not too good about this block. My plan is to build a 540 with AFR 305's for the street. If not - I'm going to find a donor 454 and go 496

Can I use AFR's or Edle Jr's with this Mark V ? I've read alot about the waterjacket issues. Do aftermarket heads (aluminum) work on V's ?

What about running a stick without the bosses for the clutch stuff ?

Should I buy the block ? if its under $1000 ?

if you've got a junkyard near you anywhere... you can get a full motor for a couple hundred bucks, and they'll have earlier than mark V... a lot of junkyard cars have virgin blocks as well, mostly because the owners never took care of the car enough to want to rebuild the motor....ya just gotta do a little looking... hell, the other day at the junkyard i found a 46 plymouth with a straight body, trashed interior and the flathead was still under the hood

I say save your money for a Dart block.
Good head choice with the AFR'S
They will make great power on a 540 to 7,000 RPM area.

i have use that block is it the best no but they work. i have one i built that is out to 540 and is twin turbo

The question is then - Can I use the 305 AFR's ? (special gaskets ?)

The reason I ask this basic question is most of the literature I have read says heads are not interchangeable.....However I notice the aftermarket (in Summit, Jegs, etc) never mentions this.

What about running a 5-Speed because it doesn't have the boss ? I'm going to run a TKO Tremec.

I guess now if the price is right (because its brand new) I may jump on it for a 540 instead of a 496 using a donor motor.

5 speed will work i'm pretty sure theres an adapter plate for your car, you could buy a new one or get a junkyard one and clean her up and rebuild it..... then you can run a cable setup for your clutch and get rid of the old clattery clutch linkage, or you can even go to a hydraulic clutch

them heads will work you just have to get the right head gaskets that have the pint out for the mark 5/6 water pass fel-pro has them the old mark 4 heads do not work on this block lack of surface on the head by top of the deck were coolant holes are to seal up on the new design of the deck on the 5/6 block
