I have been trying to find a 454 block cheap instead of building this 427 tall deck I have. No luck. The tall deck is in great shape and really think I should just use it. Especially since it was free. It has a steel crank (stock), as I mentioned before I purchased car pistons that should run about 10.3 or so compression with the heads I want. If I purchase a set of 6.5 rods, can I use the stock steel crank and the car pistons? Is there anything I should know before I purchase the rods? I noticed that Edelbrock makes a TD intake manifold (454-R) has anyone used this? Where would I purchase a distributor for this motor? Does anyone have an idea of what HP range it will have and how high of a nitrous shot I will be able to safely run?

I think you need to start all over and tell us exactly what you are trying to do. Originally Posted by 427Thumper Originally Posted by 427Thumper

Maybe I didn't say it the correct way. I have in my posession a 427 tall deck motor. I already had it bored .060, had the crank polished and ordered "car" pistons for it. Then I was advised that I should get rid of the tall deck and try to find a short deck block. I have spent the last month trying to locate a reasonably priced 454 block 9.8 in. I have not had any luck. So I was asking you guys....if I keep the tall deck and use it. Can I use the stock steel crank and car pistons that I bought? If I can use the stock crank and car pistons would I only need to purchase rods that are 6.535 or would I have to purchase another crank also. Again...I am in a dilema. I got the block for free and it is in excellent condition. I already paid to for the Machine work and car pistons. I'm not sure what to do and was asking for advice. Pat has responded but I don't understand a lot of his short hand. Again, I am new to engine building and you guys seem to be the experts. I just don't speak the jargon and have a hard time understanding the return responses.

I was trying to build a radical engine for my 1969 Malibu that I am going to turn into a COPO clone. It will be street legal but I still want it to run like a bat out of hell. I would also like to be able to spray a 200 shot of nitrous eventually. Money is an issue...as it probably is for everyone.
