    My mystery 396

hey! A couple of months I did some trade work with my friend,Me and my dad made him a scoop and put it on his hood, And he gave me a 396 big block. It had everything a engine would need except for a carb. I pulled off the valve covers and and saw tha there were bracket of some sort that were supporting the push rods. Then I saw that the holes that the oil drips out of were made bigger. I then pulled of the head And then I saw that the piston was a .040 popup. Thats is as far as I have gone as far as taking it apart. What I want to know is should I expect this to be a well performing engine with what I have found so far And How should I go about taking Apart the rest or should I even continue to take it apart

The reason I started to take it apart was because I wanted to see how clean all the parts were because I thought the engine had never had a rebuilt before and thanks for setting me clear on the guide plates

when you pull the oil pan you will see rods and rod caps, that and mains and main caps. pull the #1 rod cap and the #4 rod cap and see what the bearings look like and let us know.
