If you want low-end torque and a strong midrange, then the tri-power is fine. That's why the General used it on the Rat in a heavy car.
If your needs are more performance-oriented, then your intake choices will be limited by the engine build. Is the engine better suited to take advantage of torque, or RPM, or flow?
Aftermarket suppliers have a wide variety of manifolds to suit nearly any application. Edelbrock seems to have the best selection and ample technical support.
If the Rat is in the open, like a traditional rod, then tri-power may be your best option to get "the look". You may sacrifice some hp for it, but in a rod, "the look" is the best part.
To add to Mad's correct points, if you're only changing from a factory tri-power to an Edelbrock, with no other changes to the engine, the increase in power would be minimal. Assuming you're not putting it in a Vette where you need the hood clearance, the Edelbrock would likely gain that small amount of hp increase by not being the low profile design of the factory unit.
My information could be a little outdated (big surprise), but the only Edelbrock multiple carb maifold I show for the BBC is a dual quad intake.
With my intrest in tri-powers, I have kind of looked for aftermarket BBC units over the years and only units I have ever come across are the factory Corvette units which are pretty rare and very pricey.
If you have an Edelbrock part# or a manufature of any aftermarket unit for the BBC could you please post it here?
