I believe only the 496 was sold under the Vortec name.

They are truck heads, crap out at about 4500 RPM.

If you google Vortec 454, you'll find lots of references. BBC Vortec heads exist, but I don't know anything about their interchangeability.Last edited by Henry Rifle; 12-30-2005 at 04:06 PM.

I have a Vortec 454 out of a '97 Suburban. It is a pretty decent engine after a cam/intake/head swap

The vortec 454 was made from 1996 thru 2000. It replaced the throttle body 454. that was used from 1987 thru 1995.
I would question the condition of the engine if he only wants $ 1200 for it, sounds like a builder to me. I bought a rebuilt the other day and the core charge was $ 900.
I am working on a 496 to replace my 454 with, using the 454 top end it should be a fairly easy swap over.
Well I've sure gotten old too so don't worry about it! I've had two bypass surgeries, new knees, fought prostate, cancer and diabetes. I'm half blind, can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine,...
