I have a 1984 chevy pickup with a 12" lift and 35" tires. I just blew the 454 that was in the truck and I am considering swapping it for a 6.2L diesel. I need to know what this truck is going to need. I have a TH400 that I want to keep. How much stuff am I going to have to change. The diffs have 411's in them, Is that too low? And how about the cooling?
Think you may be better off either rebuilding the big block or finding a replacement gas motor. Unless you have a complete donor truck you may run into costs that are not worth the change. Your going to need a wire harness, a inst. cluster, the fuel filter assy, brake system (the diesel runs it's boost off the p/s),and either a new trans or a adaptor plate.To top it off you probably won't like the performance.
Don't forget an exhaust, as the diesel can't run with car converters. Also, it is heavier, so the front will sag a bit more.
You fuel filler neck is for unleaded, the vaor recovery is for gasoline. this will have to be dealt with...
here in pa diesels have no emmissions test, BUT your registraion will show GAS engine, so you will have to talk to the DMV about that.
The th400 ? will it shift without a vacuum ? Even if it will, take it from a guy that HAD to drive one, to and from work for two winters & I don't live in Vancouver. You do not want a 6.2L . And if you had a 454 , you will be VERY disappointed with the change . :eek:
