i want to know how is the best way to degree my new cam in with the motor in the car and complete. i'll need detailed instructions. i'm not under standing some facts on the matter.i've never degreed any of my cams in but i'm ready to start with some expert help thanks.
While its nice to know how to do it, degreeing a cam is not really necessary. Put it in time by the marks and button it up. A degree or so one way or the other won't make any noticeable difference on a mild street engine.
for a first timer you should try checking cam degrees on a engine on a stand and not in the car i have done it and its a back killer and you will have to turn it a lot with all the pistons on it makes it hard to be rigth on from the pistons rings on the cylinder walls i check all cams un less it is stock i have put them in were cam was suppose to be and have move them to. it is hard to tell what the engine likes by putting it straight in 2.5 degrees +or- will not do much un less you have a dyno to back it up .piston to valve is some you should check this kills a lot of engines and many things like not the rigth size push rods to long or to short the damper not on true line up on top dead center with timming tab.not the rigth bottom end oil crearance.this stuff will turn a big block in to junk. i had to move the cam from hitting the rods on a big stroke big block this happen on the big stuff un less you run a small base circle cam and i still made big power on the dyno. i run a belt drive on my street car and have move it 4 degrees at a time and not see much . i put a cam in 454 and move it over 6- for more top end and the guy did not want to pay to get the pistons fly cut and it ran like hell so you can take it from there :whacked:
